被評定為三級歷史建築(初時外面)

中環街市的前身，是早年為居於中環一帶華人開設的廣州市場，位於皇后大道中與嘉咸街交界。在香港的歷史檔案中，中環街市一直是中西文化和新舊交替的匯聚點。在1994年，部分的中環街市改建作中環購物廊，成為半山自動扶梯的起點。中環街市在2003年3月正式停止運作。

SPD4459 Central and Western Distric 

The Central MARKET traces its origins to the Canton Bazaar built for the earliest Chinese settlement in the neighborhood. For a long period in Hong Kong's history, the Central Market was where East met West and where Old met New. In 1994, part of the Central Market was converted to the Central ESCALATOR Link Alley Shopping Arcade which is the starting point of the Mid-levels escalator system. The Central Market ceased operation in March 2003. 

建築特色

中環街市在1939年建成，是當時盛行的現代簡約主義的建築例子，亦是後期藝術裝飾主義衍生出來的一門風格。街市大樓的特色是簡單的橫向線型，而整個建築設計是從大樓的實用功能出發。

Architectural Interest 

Built in 1939, the Central Market is an example of the Streamlined Moderne style of the times, derived from the later stage of Art Deco, and characterised by slim horizontal lines and the functionalism of the building.

市區重建局會活化中環街市成為「城中綠洲」，為中環鬧市增添極為需要的休憩空間及綠化環境，並為中環上班一族提供一個時尚的消閒去處。






The Urban Renewal Authority will revitalise the Central Market into a "Central OASIS" to provide some much needed space and greenery amidst the hustle and bustle of Central and a trendy hang-out for the working population in Central.
